Personal Development
We consider Personal Development to cover the following areas:
- Curriculum experiences and visits – to build cultural capital
- Wider opportunities – to develop special talents and interests
- Outdoor Learning – to develop understanding about the natural world and sustainability, and build resilience
- Emotional development and mental health – to enable children to be healthy in mind as well as body
- Spiritual development – to go on a journey of personal growth of who we are on the inside and how we behave on the outside
- Community and understanding of others – to build social and moral understanding, and to give to others in different ways
- Citizenship – to develop understanding of rights and responsibilities, inclusion and equality of opportunity, and prepare children for life in modern Britain
Intent
Our Personal Development programme is reflected in our school ethos of 'every child, every chance, everyday'. Our intent is to teach children how to navigate through life safely, happily and healthily, so they can leave our school feeling confident, unique and proud. Children are growing up in a world that is constantly changing and it is the duty of all the staff at school, in partnership with the parents, to teach the children transferable life skills. At Netheravon, we recognise that the primary years are a key time for children to develop their own identity and aspirations for the future. As well as academic development, it is essential that children are given opportunities, through the curriculum and beyond, for personal development. The opportunities we can offer them while at Netheravon will impact upon their future, playing a crucial role in helping them to prepare for their adult lives so they can go on to engage positively in society.
Our core Christian values of service, courage and faith at the heart of our Personal Development programme.
For our children to show service:
We aim to develop students who live faithfully and strive to be the best they can be, but who also serve others and the world around them, selflessly. This includes raising awareness of environmental issues, and teaching our children the importance of showing kindness towards our planet and all creation as well as the importance of voluntary work and serving the community.
For our children to have courage:
Our pupils develop a positive mind-set and have high aspirations of themselves. This enables them to be courageous, showing determination and self-belief to try new things and see mistakes as opportunities to learn. We also want them to use this courage to advocate for, and support others.
For our children to have faith
We ensure that all children feel that they belong in our special community, so – combined with our high aspiration and expectations – they feel safe, encouraged and prepared to flourish both during their time at Netheravon and beyond.
